TRAILS, BIRDING The 824 ha Uitenhage Nature Reserve is located around 'The Eyes', freshwater springs that contribute to the town's water supply. The nature reserve protects a variety of plantlife that is associated with Valley Bushveld, grassland and dry Karoo vegetation. Aloes offer a particularly fine spectacle when they flower between the months of June and August. Bird-watchers will find the most productive area near the springs. Location: Uitenhage Access: From Uitenhage take the R75 northwards towards Graaf-Reinet and after 8 km turn off to the clearly signposted Springs Holiday Resort; the resort is located within the reserve. Accommodation: The holiday resort has self-catering accommodation and a camping site. Other facilities: A network of footpaths; guided tours at 15h00 every weekday except Thursday, and at 14h00 and 16h00 at weekends and on public holidays; picnic sites with fireplaces; swimming pool at resort; look-out tower. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 08h00 to sunset.
